Shires League Defeat for Notts U13's in Local
Derby
On Sunday 14th December 2003 the Notts U13 team travelled to Leicester for their first away match of the season.
Notts were hoping for success in this match following their defeat by Leicester in the recent Team Challenge in Warwickshire. Unfortunately, Notts never seemed to find any momentum and lost the fixture quite heavily, not winning a single match. However, there were some excellent performances during the match and again Notts had 3 players making their Shires League debuts.
In the boys singles, Josh Gilmore of Hucknall National School had a very tight game with Avinash Chandarana eventually losing 15-13 and 15-8 as did Kabir Khan of CTC school losing to Peter Briggs 17-14, 15-13. Colum O'Shea and Angus Carrington also lost 15-10, 15-11 and 15-11, 15-10 respectively.
Jess Martin of Gedling School and Kabir narrowly lost their mixed doubles match 15-13, 15-13 and only Heidi Wiltshire took her singles match to a decider, eventually losing 6-11, 11-8 and 13-12 to C Burns. Jess Tandy and Jess Martin took their doubles match to deciders as did Josh Gilmore and Colum O'Shea.
Overall on the day Notts weren't quite strong enough and Leicester ran out easy winners. Notts can hopefully learn something from this in time for their next Shires match at home to Northants on 1st February 2003.
The full team representing Notts in this match were :
Josh Gilmore - Hucknall National School, Jess Tandy - Sir Edmund Hilary School, Kabir Khan - CTC Nottingham, Jess Martin - Gedling School, Colum O'Shea - Beckett School, Kate Fenton - Toothill School Bingham, A Carrington - Garibaldi School and Heidi Wiltshire.

Badminton a Hit at Morven Park

Kirkby’s Morven Park Primary School pupils thoroughly enjoyed their first taste of badminton in the school’s new sports hall on 22nd and 29th July 2003.
The event was organised jointly by Helen Marriott, the school co-ordinator, and badminton coach Terry Broughton, with the intention of starting a regular After School Badminton Club.
The children were divided into ages 5 to 8 and 9 to 11, with each age group playing two three-hour sessions over the two-day event with the emphasis on fun games.
It was a tremendous success, the forty-three children who attended had so much fun that they wanted to stay for more and can’t wait for the after school classes to begin when they return from the school holidays.
Well done to all those who took part.

Tournament Success for Bluecoats and Manning Girls School Nottingham’s success in developing Badminton at
School/Junior level continues to gather momentum. Following on from our recent achievement at the National Schools Under 17 Inter Counties Tournament, where we were only narrowly beaten into second place by Yorkshire, funding was obtained for the Notts Junior Badminton Association from the National Lottery to organise a Nottingham City Schools Tournament. The funding was used to provide free After School coaching
to 11 & 12 year olds, giving them an early introduction to the sport.
Sixteen schools eagerly took the opportunity to participate, with the challenging prospect of going on to compete in the Tournament. The Tournament and funding, which was organised by Elaine
Spray the Notts Badminton Development Officer, took place at the David Lloyd
Rackets Club at Aspley in June, with 8 schools entering 25 teams and over 50
pupils taking part. The format was even doubles for boys and girls on a round robin basis (each pair playing all of the other pairs). The boy's section was won by Bluecoats School and the girls’ section by Manning Girls School. The winners were all presented with medals. The event was a huge success and the children enjoyed themselves immensely. It is hoped that they will continue to play and enjoy Badminton in the future, keep themselves fit and help to keep Nottingham at the forefront of the sport.

Ninety six children between the ages of 6 to 8 from the family of schools feeding Ashfield School, namely All Saints, Greenwood, Jeffries, John Davies, Kirkby Woodhouse, Mapplewells and Orchard B and C were invited by Ashfield School to enjoy their first taste of various sports - Badminton, Athletics, Gymnastics and Hockey.
Teachers and sixth form pupils were on hand to assist the professional coaches. These coaches were from Sutton Harriers (Athletics) Ashfield/Mansfield Hockey Club (Barn Hockey) Ashfield School PE Department (Gymnastics) and Ron Dennis and Elaine Spray coaches from Nottinghamshire Badminton Association (Badminton)
Parents were invited to come and watch and judging from the noise and laughter the children enjoyed themselves immensely and energetically entered into the spirit of things. It is hoped that this initial introduction into sport in a fun non competitive environment, will encourage the children who took part to become interested in sport and to be involved on an ongoing basis, thus promoting a fit and healthy lifestyle and so avoid the couch potato syndrome.
The activities finally came to a close at 6.00pm when each and every participant received a certificate from Ashfield School who are trying to raise the profile of physical activity in their family of schools. It is hoped that Ashfield School's initiative will be followed by other schools to enable their children to enjoy a similar event. As one who took part I can vouch that the happy smiling children who left the school each clutching their certificates had had a fun day.

An article that recently appeared in the Mansfield Chad
Local badminton club Kirkby Crocodiles have achieved remarkable success in the 2002-2003 season, having won two titles in the Nottingham and District Badminton League and also having finished second in two others. In addition they reached the Semi Final of the Nottingham Badminton Association's knockout cup, only losing narrowly 5-4 in a hard fought contest to the eventual winners Bingham.
Pictured at the Notts BA presentation evening are some of Kirkby Crocodiles players, together with the trophies.
What makes these successes all the more amazing is that the club was only formed in July 2001. In that short time the club has attracted no less than 38 members and has seven league teams.
The Crocodiles are looking to build on this success by attracting local players of league standard to strengthen their squad. Any interested parties can contact Ron Dennis on 01623 559 207.
Two other local clubs Byron and Mansfield Oaktree also had their share of success, Byron winning one title, and coming second in three others, and Oaktree winning one title and finishing second in one other.
All in all quite a success for three of our local badminton clubs.

The Manor
school's new Sports and Recreation Centre in Mansfield Woodhouse
Nottinghamshire, which had it's official opening on 11th of May 2002, has become
the first such centre in the country to receive the prestigious Badminton
Association of England accreditation award
as a Badminton Performance and
Development Centre.
The award was presented by Mike Kingsland, Project
Officer of the Nottinghamshire Badminton Association at a presentation evening
on 7th March 2003 which was attended by John Briggs Vice Chairman of the
Badminton Association, Johnathon Hickman Head Teacher of The Manor School,
Barbara Bakewell The Manor School's Director of Sport, Catriona Paterson Manager
Manor Sports and Recreation Centre and Elaine Spray Notts Badminton Development
Officer. This award is only made when all of the technical and integral
facilities meet the Badminton Association's stringent requirements, which enable
all levels of badminton development and performance to flourish, from the young
beginner to the seasoned international.
This award is yet another milestone in the development of the school as a specialist sports college, and was achieved in partnership with the Nottinghamshire Badminton Association, who had formed this partnership with the school in the early days of the new sports hall conception, and had prepared a badminton development plan, which was incorporated into the school's lottery bid. Throughout the construction stage of the project the Nottinghamshire Badminton Association worked in conjunction with the Nottinghamshire county architect, to ensure that the final result was a sports hall that they could be proud of and one that would reach classification as an East Midlands Badminton Performance and Development Centre.
Since the centre opened the
development of badminton has taken a high priority, and has provided badminton
within the school's curriculum. In addition The Mansfield Meteors Junior
Badminton Club has been established. This club is affiliated to the
Nottinghamshire Junior
Badminton Association, and is open to all youngsters in
the community, between the ages of 8 and 16. The club meets on a Friday evening,
and although the emphasis is on enjoyment, experienced coaches, Dave Goodall and
Girish Ravat, are on hand to help those youngsters who want to progress to a
higher level.
The centre has become the adopted home of the Nottinghamshire Schools' Badminton Association, and every week the Schools' junior county squads train at the centre, with teams entered in the National Shires Leagues in the under 13, under 15, and under 17 age groups. Most weekends individual players enter the Badminton Association of England's National Age Group tournaments.
The centre's "performance" classification is enhanced by having in place the East Midlands Cell for both the World Class Start, and World Class Potential elements of the Sport England World Class programme. These cells cater for the development of the young England players. Notts schools currently have 14 players in the programme who have all represented their country at International level.

Robert Adcock (16) of Ravenshead, a pupil of Colonel Frank Seely School and a member of Byron and Mansfield Junior Badminton Clubs performed outstandingly last weekend to win gold in both the National Under 17 Mens Doubles and Mixed Doubles events held at Slough.
Robert who has been a regular England International for the last 5 years and is now ranked in the Top 5 in Europe, only recovered from a 3 month injury less than 2 weeks before the event and exceeded all expectations given the length of his lay off. The Doubles title was won with his Yorkshire based partner Ed Foster and the Mixed with partner Jenny Wallwark who is also from Yorkshire.
Whilst Robert has won numerous medals in events all across the UK and Europe during recent years these were his first individual National Titles. Earlier in the season he won individual medals for England in Germany and Sweden as well as an England team gold in the Danish Cup in Copenhagen.
Robert is now looking forward to the European Under 17 team Championships to be held in Denmark after Easter and is hoping to lead the Nottinghamshire Schools Under 17 squad to the National team championships to be held at Nottingham University during the Easter break.
Several other Notts Juniors performed really well at last weekends Nationals – Christopher Adcock (13 – Roberts younger brother) reached the quarter final stage of all 3 events along with Neil Ryves (16) from Worksop. Ruth Coleman from Colwick won a Bronze in the Ladies Doubles and Peter Mills (14) reached the quarter final in the Mens singles.
Overall an outstanding effort by our local players.![]()

Jenny Ward, from Eakring, a pupil at the Nottingham High School for Girls, has enjoyed a superb start to 2003.
In early January, the talented 15-year-old Mansfield club player won the Welsh National U-15 singles and doubles titles in her home city of Cardiff.
The following weekend she repeated the feat at U-17 level, a fantastic achievement for the Notts Schools County player.
To cap what had been a marvellous month, Jenny entered the Welsh Senior Nationals and stunned the senior players by reaching the semi-finals of the singles before losing to UK No.1 Kelly Morgan.
She then went on to the last four of the doubles, losing to top Welsh seniors, Muggeridge and Gallop. They represented Wales in the Commonwealth games in Manchester last year.
Jenny will be hoping to continue her good run for Notts
in the U-17 National Team Championships at Nottingham University over Easter.

Nottinghamshire
Sports Review of the Year - 2002
Life Time Achievement Award
for Gill
Attewell
At the 11th Nottinghamshire Sports Review of the Year, held at County Hall on 16th January 2003, Gill Attewell was added to the county’s Roll of Honour for her services to Junior Badminton.
Gill has spent an incredible 50 years in badminton
during the past 25 years of which she has been the inspiration, chair and secretary
of Sunrise Junior Badminton Club.
It was way back in 1975 when in collaboration with her late husband, John, and Frank Hardy, the Nottinghamshire Junior Badminton Association was formed. This new Association brought together the few autonomous junior clubs playing in Nottinghamshire at the time and led to the formation of a junior league structure with three age levels.
Today Nottinghamshire is the only county in the country with a thriving independent Junior Association, the Association now having 18 affiliated junior badminton clubs.
Gill has made Sunrise Junior Badminton Club one of the most successful in the county and she has been completely dedicated to ensuring that junior players across Nottinghamshire have an opportunity to develop.
In addition to running a successful club Gill has been the inspiration behind the Sunrise Junior Badminton Tournament, which has been on the Nottinghamshire junior events calendar for as long as anybody can remember. This tournament takes place at the end of the season and is eagerly looked forward to by the young players of all the junior clubs. The tournament has raised hundreds of pounds for charities including Children in Need.
Congratulations to Gill, for a well deserved honour, from everybody associated with Nottinghamshire Badminton.
The honour to Gill was not the end of the badminton story at the Sports Review of the Year. In two other categories Nottinghamshire Schools’ Badminton were represented in the final three nominations for ‘Administrator of the Year’ and ‘School Team of the Year’.
Paul Adcock, Chairman of the Nottinghamshire Schools’ Badminton Association, reached final nomination for Administrator of the year and the Schools’ Under 15 Squad reached final nomination for School Team of the year.
In the short time Paul has been Chairman of the Nottinghamshire Schools’ Badminton Association he has reorganised the administration and coaching schedules to the advantage of both the parents and the children. This is now arguably the strongest Schools Squad Nottinghamshire has ever had with some fourteen of the youngsters being selected by the Badminton Association of England to attend a World Class Start cell.
The Schools’ Under 15 Squad remained unbeaten all season and retained their champion status in winning the Shires League (consisting of 8 neighbouring counties). More impressively they won the National Team Championships. The squad included 6 England squad members and the Welsh No 1 and National Champion.
Congratulations to you all.

Big Lars a Winner with Four Counties
A Four
Counties coaching seminar at the David Lloyd Tennis Centre and attended by coaches
from Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire, Leicestershire and Northamptonshire was a
big success.
Two of England's top international team coaches gave the latest practical and theoretical ideas and information to the 45 coaches. This will enable these coaches to pass on the most recent information from the BAofE to the players in the Four Counties, thus improving their overall playing ability.
Lars
Sologub, who is also the British Olympic badminton performance director, was guest speaker, and gave an extremely
interesting insight into the latest coaching techniques, and tactical analysis
of players and their opponents.
The important issue of child protection was discussed, and all present welcomed the fact that in future coaches would be vetted by the Criminal Records Bureau, and be issued with certificates, and identification.
After lunch Lars Sofogub and Mike Adams gave practical demonstrations, with particular emphasis on the latest techniques in playing the backhand shots.
Elaine Spray, the Nottinghamshire Badminton Development Office, put the event together, and obtained
Lottery funding of £2,450 to run the course.
