The award shows the clubs commitment towards a safe, friendly environment and equality for all members within the arena.

Junior Doubles Pairs Through To The Last 16

At the World Junior Championships in Canada, the Individual tournament is approaching its final stages and England has three doubles pairs through to the last 16.

Nottingham's
Robert Adcock and Jennifer Wallwork have made their way to the third round of the Mixed Doubles after comfortably beating the Hong Kong pair Hui and Lam. The next match will be a tough one as they are up against the number two seeds from Korea, Yeon Seong Yoo and Jung Eun Ha.

Robert is also through to the third round in the Men’s Doubles with partner Edward Foster. They had a bye in the first round and then won in the next round by beating a Portuguese / Croatian combination pair; they now meet a seeded pair from Chinese Taipei.

Heather Olver and Jennifer Wallwork are progressing through the rounds in the Womens Doubles. With a bye in the first round they went on to beat a pair from Czech Republic after a precarious start losing the first set and only just winning the second 17-16; they fought back hard and won the final set in 15-5. They face the 3/4 seeds from Indonesia in the third round.

Michelle Cheung and Mariana Agathangelou were unfortunately drawn against the second seeds from China in the Womens Doubles after a bye in the first round. Their opponents were too overwhelming for the England players and Chinese pair moved comfortably through to the next round.

Eleanor Cox also went out in the third round after putting up a fight against Nitya Krisinda from Indonesia. She finally lost out 11-8 in the third and final set.

On Top Of The World

Robert Adcock (18) of Ravenshead (a pupil of Colonel Frank Seely School) has this week been selected to represent England in the Under 19 World Junior Badminton Championships to be held in Vancouver, Canada next month.  This will be the highlight of Robert's badminton career to date and is the culmination of many years training.  He has been a regular Junior International since the age of 12.

Robert's selection was confirmed following an outstanding start to the current season-Robert won Gold in both the Mens Doubles and Mixed events at the main qualifying event for the UK squads in York last month and this was followed by an outstanding Gold and Bronze at the biggest Under 19 European Junior Tournament in Düsseldorf, Germany two weeks later.  As a consequence of Robert's recent European travels, he is now ranked One in Europe at Doubles and Three at Mixed.

Last weekend he travelled to the Under 19 Swedish Open in Malmo and once again took a Gold in the Doubles event beating the home based Swedish number One pair in the semi and the Czechs in the final - he then took Silver in the mixed with his Nottingham based England partner, Jane Schuller from Worksop.

As preparation for the World Championships, Robert will be travelling with the England squad to Denmark for the Danish Cup in two weeks time and will be training hard between now and the Canadian trip at the recently opened High Performance Training Centre at Sheffield Hallam University.

Robert started his badminton career with Sue Manchester at the Cornwater Junior Badminton Club that meets at Ravenshead Leisure Centre every Saturday morning and was until recently an active member of Mansfield Junior Badminton Club, which now meets every Friday at the Manor School complex in Mansfield Woodhouse.

Local Nottinghamshire County Badminton Coach, Dave Goodall, who is also the Coach of Mansfield Junior Badminton Club, says that “he was delighted with Robert's selection and we all look forward to watching his career develop over the next few years.”

John Briggs Is A Man With A Mission

Nottinghamshire Badminton Association’s Chairman, John Briggs, has stepped up to become the new chairman of the Badminton Association of England.

A long-time BA of E vice-president and deputy chairman, he succeeds John Havers, who now takes over the presidency from Bill Andrew.  The changes took effect at the annual meeting in June.

Chairman Briggs said:
“It's a great honour for me and a real challenge.  I want to carry on the good work of John Havers and I am looking forward to the BA of E making great strides.

As the benefits of the Whole Sport Plan fall into place I am sure the Association can go from strength to strength.

The aim is to see the Association consolidate and it is my particular hope that the membership will start to increase again.

The Association revolves around its members and without your support we can't build on our past achievements.

I have been a county chairman for a number of years and I am fully familiar with the issues that must be dealt with and the many different problems that other counties are confronted with.

I share the same great passion for badminton as my predecessors and, as many of you know, I am president of the Badminton Umpires' Association of England and I am still an active umpire.

Given my active involvement in the game I feel I am well placed to help get things done and to identify the areas where attention is most needed.

I just want to carry on the good work done by John Havers as chairman and Bill Andrew as president.

And I know that with John now president, I will still be able to tap into his experience.

We will, as always, be working as a team at the National Badminton Centre to ensure our great game continues to thrive up and down the country.“

Robertson And Emms Take Olympic Silver

Nathan Robertson and Gail Emms had to settle for silver after being beaten in a tense badminton mixed doubles final.

Nathan Robertson and Gail Emms earn silver after losing a thrilling badminton mixed doubles final. - Photo courtesy of BBC Sport Website The Britons lost a see-saw battle 15-1 12-15 15-12 to defending champions and second seeds Ling Gao and Jun Zhang.

The Chinese took the first game in just 12 minutes but urged on by the vocal British fans in the Goudi Olympic Hall, Robertson and Emms battled back.

They won the second game and led 7-3 in the third but the Chinese fought back to repel the Britons' brave challenge.

The Chinese pair overwhelmed the fourth seeds in the first game with Zhang's left-handed smashes punishing the Britons.

But Robertson and Emms stepped up a level in a tense second set.

The Chinese - and Zhang in particular - were getting rattled and there was controversy when he served at 6-10.

The line-judge at first called the serve out and then changed his mind, prompting a protest from the Britons.

But the Britons recovered to take the game 15-12 and although they went 3-0 down in the third, they won seven points in a row to take command.

From then on it was a see-saw battle of nerves before the Chinese pair finally prevailed 15-12 in a nail-biting finale.

The British pair, who had been seeded fourth, were proud yet disappointed after the rollercoaster match.

"It was such a close final and we were leading in the third game," Robertson told BBC Sport.

"I just think they were a bit more positive right at the end. That was the difference."

"They came out incredibly fast and blew us off the court," added the 27-year-old.

"We did brilliantly to stick in there and fight in the second game. I really think we should have won that but we've got to look back with pride at what we've achieved."

Emms said: "I think we exceeded what we expected to do out here but you go out there and you want to win and there is a gutting feeling when you lose."

Meanwhile Denmark's Jens Eriksen and Mette Schjoldager beat Rikke Olsen and Jonas Rasmussen for the bronze.

Duo's Bid For Medal

British badminton boss Lars Sologub believes Olympic mixed doubles hopefuls Nathan Robertson and Gail Emms have the credentials to repeat Britain's bronze medal success of four years ago in Sydney.

Nathan Robertson & Gail Emms - Photo courtesy of Nottingham Evening PostThe fourth-seeded duo are undoubtedly the main medal hopes in the event.  They are the only seeds from the British team and were victorious In the European Champion- ships earlier this year.

With Simon Archer and Joanne Goode having put badminton firmly on the map in the UK with their exploits in the 2000 Games, hopes are high that Robertson, from Nottingham, and Emms can continue to raise the profile of the sport by taking a medal away from Athens.

And Sologub, Team GB's badminton performance director, is convinced the pair have what it takes to pick up a medal,

"During the last 12 to 15 months Nathan and Gail have beaten all the best in the world in different occasions except the number one seeds, so they have already proved they could do it," said Sologub.

"They won the European Championships.  It was actually the first time they have won a championships.  They've been close before, but that has given them lots of confidence because mentally the difference between being close to doing it and actually doing it is massive."

Robertson and Emms received a bye in the draw and will play in the last 16 against the winner of the tie between German pair.  Bjoern Siegemund and Nicol Pitro and Australians Travis Denney and Kate Wilson-Smith - opponents who Sologub considers very beatable.

"That's a good draw in my opinion.  On a normal day Nathan and Gail should win against those players," said the Swede.

"No match is easy in the Olympics but once you get past your first match and the momentum builds, anything is possible."

Sologub believes the toughest first-round draw for his charges is Robertson and fellow Nottingham player Anthony Clark's tie against Thai duo Sudket Prapakamol and Patapol Ngernsrisuk in the men's doubles.

Robertson Vows To Come Back In Glory

Nathan Robertson is in determined mood. The 26-year-enjoyed the buzz of his first Olympic Games in Sydney four years ago.

But after coming back empty-handed, the Notts badminton ace has vowed he is heading for Athens with one thing in mind - glory.

Nathan Robertson and Gail Emms - Courtesy of Nottingham Evening PostThe Cotgrave star says it was a case of enjoying the experience on his debut in the Olympics in 2000. But with four years' more experience behind him, medals are all he is thinking about this summer.

Robertson is one of Great Britain's favourites for a gold, silver or bronze when he takes to the court in the mixed doubles with partner Gail Emms in August.

The pair are seeded fourth for the Games and in the men's doubles, Robertson partners Anthony Clark, who is also from Nottingham. However, their ranking of tenth in the world means it will be a tough challenge to come home with a medal.

But the Notts star is in a positive frame of mind with only three months to go until the Games in Greece.

"I'm delighted to have been selected in the GB squad and I'm looking forward to it," said Robertson. "I have got my eyes set on a medal.

"I went to Sydney and it was more for the experience but this time I want to achieve something.

"We have a great chance and I'm focused on the medals. I don't want to be coming home empty-handed.

"It will be more difficult in the men's doubles because we are not seeded. We are likely to face some favourites early which will make it tough, but we are still capable. We plan to give it our best shot."

Former world No.1s Robertson and Emms won the European Badminton Championships in Geneva, boosting their confidence ahead of the Games.

And Robertson and Clark also represented England at the Thomas Cup in Jakarta, Indonesia, winning two out of three matches.

Robertson added: "There is a long time to the Olympics and I have got to keep playing well.

"We fly out to a holding camp in Cyprus before making our way to Athens. That is when we can do our final preparations.

"The aim is to go to Athens feeling healthy and injury-free. And of course, to win a medal."

Simon Clegg, the chief executive of the British Olympic Association, said: "The bronze medal achieved by Great Britain in the mixed doubles in Sydney was a terrific achievement and the recent form of Nathan Robertson and Gail Emms gives us hope for success in Athens.

"We wish all the athletes well as they make their final preparations ahead of the Games."

Nathan Wins Euro-Gold

Cotgrave's Nathan Robertson had to settle for a single gold in the European Badminton Championships in Geneva.

There was disappointment for England in the men's final when Robertson and Anthony Clark lost 15-3, 15-9 to Jens Eriksen and Martin Lundgaard (Denmark).

But Robertson and Gail Emms made no mistake in the mixed doubles.

The top seeds and former world No.1s beat Denmark's second seeds Jonas Rasmussen and Rikke Olssen 15-3 8-15 15-5 in a final full of nerves and controversy.

Olsen was service-faulted three times in the first game and twice called for referee Ernest Robinson, who was involved in discussions with Danish coach Steen Pedersen before the Frenchman then went and positioned himself behind the service judge.

Olsen switched to high rather than short serves for the second and third games.

But the Danes came back from 3-1 down in the second to take it easily 15-8 and led 3-0 in the decider before Robertson, from Cotgrave, and Emms surged back for a 10-4 lead and then clinched it 15-5.

Emms, who finished the match with an injured right calf, said: "This will keep us in number four spot in the world. I'm so pleased for us both.

"There will be a champagne celebration then I will have to rest my injury for a couple of weeks."

The County schools Under 17's Badminton squad achieved National Champion status last weekend.  Having won the regional division of the National Shires league the squad had qualified for the National Finals along with local rivals Leicestershire.

The winners and the runners up of the Four Regional divisions attended the finals, which took place at Badminton College in Leicestershire.

Adcock Is County's Golden Boy

Ravenshead schoolboy Chris Adcock is hoping to be selected for next month's European Under-17 badminton championships.

Adcock, 14, who is Notts County Council schools sportsperson of the year, ended the season with the greatest total of gold medals won in a season by an English junior international.

His latest three golds came at the European championship in Dusseldorf, Germany.

The pupil of Colonel Frank Seely School, Calverton, who is a member of Mansfield Badminton Club, had already won five European golds this year - two at the Swedish Open, three at the Danish Cup.

Adcock approached the German event seeded No.1 in both singles and doubles.

He won the singles final against Danish No.1 and European No.3 seed Dennis Prehn in two sets 15-6, 17-14.

The singles success was followed by doubles gold with Marcus Ellis from Yorkshire, the pair defeating the European No.2 pair, from Denmark, in a two-set final.

Adcock's third gold came as England won their first European U-15 championship since Denmark joined the event in 1987.

Badminton - Triple European Champion

Nottinghamshire County Council Schools Sports Person of the Year Chris Adcock from Ravenshead ended the current Badminton Season in the way it began, by winning three Gold Medals at the European Championship in Dusseldorf, Germany last weekend.  A fantastic achievement.

A pupil of Colonel Frank Seely School in Calverton and a member of Mansfield Badminton Club, Chris has already won five Gold Medals in Europe this year, two at the Swedish Open, three at the Danish Cup and then three last weekend at the European Championship.  This is the largest haul of Gold Medals ever won in one Season by any English Junior International.

He approached the Event in Germany seeded One in both Singles and Doubles and justified his seeding by winning the Singles Final against the Danish number One and European number Three seed Dennis Prehn in two sets 15/6 17/14.  In the Semi Final he defeated the Fourth seed from Germany in three tough sets.  In the Quarter Final he survived an epic battle with Anders Rasmussen also from Denmark-this was the Player that he defeated in the European Championships two years previously in Denmark.

Following on from his Singles success, Chris together with his England Doubles Partner Marcus Ellis from Yorkshire won the Doubles Gold by beating the Danish number One and European number Two pair in the Final relatively comfortably in two sets.  What is more Chris won his third Gold Medal by helping England to their first ever European Championship Victory at under 15 level since Denmark joined the Event in 1987.  The team itself performed exceptionally with an under 15 Ladies Individual Gold also being won by Michelle Cheung from Buckinghamshire.

England's success story in Solingen just got better and better over the weekend.

The team followed up their Under 15 team triumph with more medals in the individual events.

Leading the way was Nottinghamshire's

Adcock then added the doubles title in partnership with Marcus Ellis when the top seeds beat Denmarks Mikkel Elbjorn and Dennis Prehn 15-8, 17-14 to finish with two individual and a team gold.

Not to be outdone top seed
Michelle Cheung beat Denmark's Kamilla Hermansen to take the girls' title.

And England still weren't finished as

And there were bronze medals for boys' pair

Cotgrave's Nathan Robertson is off on his travels again.

Last week he was in Athens, winning gold in the Olympic test event with Natalie Munn.

This week he helped England to a 4-1 win over the Czech Republic in the Thomas Cup Men"s World Team Championships (European qualifying round) in Slovakia.

Robertson and his partner Anthony Clark beat Frohlich and Vondra 15-5, 15-10.

There was another boost for Robertson with the news that his mixed doubles partner, Gail Emms, was fit enough to play in Presov.

There were fears that Emms would be out for a considerable time with a hip injury that caused her to miss the recent National championships.

But she has recovered sooner than expected and returned to the squad along with Jo Goode.
