2nd July 2009
It has been another very encouraging and enjoyable season for the Nottinghamshire Schools Badminton squads.
Individually Nottinghamshire had two bronze medal winners at the U19 National Championships - both Alison Pulford (Carlton-le-Willows School) and Alex Langley (Bilborough College) won bronze medals in the Women's Doubles Event.
At U15 National Championship level, Ellie Travers (Nottingham High School for Girls) also won a bronze medal in the U15 National Mixed Championships.
To complete the set Emily Witts (Brunts School, Mansfield) also won a bronze medal at the National U13 Championships in the Girl's Double event.
At County Team level, the U17 squad have once again enjoyed a very successful season and having won their Regional Shires League they finished third at the National Shires League Finals in Leicester only a few short weeks ago. They also finished fourth nationally at the Inter-Counties Trophy competition which was held in Nottingham over the Easter period. When you bear in mind that over forty Counties take part in this event, achieving a top four placement which we have done for the last six or seven years is a great credit to the coaches and the squad.
At U15 level, it has been a very tough season for the team - we were edged out from qualifying for the National Shires League Finals by Avon who we had in fact beaten on a head-to-head basis.
At U13 level, our youngsters finished tenth at the National Team Challenge Finals and a very creditable seventh at the National Shires League Finals in Leicester.
Very encouragingly our U12 squad successfully won their North Mid-Way League. Very positive for the future.
As a County, we still have four individual players who are part of the Badminton England World Class Programme. Namely Pia Sachdeva and Ellie Travers of the Nottingham High School for Girls and Alex Langley from Bilborough College. At U14 level we also have Serena Midha of Arnold Hill School.
During the season the County also held two very enjoyable residential weekend events at Lea Green in Derbyshire and had a fantastic day with Nathan Robertson and Gail Emms (former World Champions and Olympic Silver Medallists) as part of their travelling roadshow.
I would like once again to thank all of our coaches, administrators and Committee Members for their fantastic support during what has been another good year for Nottinghamshire Schools Badminton.
