Notts Badminton Stars In The Spotlight

Cotgrave's Nathan Robertson has been forced to pull out of the Yonex All England Open Championships through illness.

The Birmingham tournament, which started today, should have been one of the first major tests for Robertson ? an Olympic silver medallist with Gail Emms in 2004 ? in his new mixed doubles partnership with Jenny Wallwork.

The 31-year-old's departure was mixed news for his England team-mate Anthony Clark, who was due to play with and against him today.

Notts star Clark may have benefited as he and Derby's Donna Kellogg, as mixed doubles opponents, got a bye into the second round.

But, as Robertson's men's doubles partner, the left-hander was left
frustrated.

The withdrawal of Robertson and Clark, the eighth seeds, from the men's doubles further decimated the field after Olympic winners and top seeds Markis Kido and Hendra Setiawan of Indonesia pulled out yesterday.

Clark and Kellogg, the European champions and fourth seeds, could now face Ravenshead's Chris Adcock and Gabrielle White in round two.

On court, English qualifier Jill Pittard's womens singles campaign ended as she was beaten 22-20 21-13 by world No.15 Yip Pui Yin (Hong Kong).
