Robertson joins the ton-up club

Nathan Robertson has joined the likes of Sir Bobby Charlton, David Beckham, Jason Leonard and Alec Stewart when he won his 100th cap for England at the Sudirman Cup in Guangzhou, China.

The Cotgrave badminton star went into the tournament on 98 caps and quickly reached 99 when he was selected to play with men's doubles partner and fellow Notts player Anthony Clark.

Robertson and Anthony Clark won a thrilling men's doubles rubber, beating world number eight pair Bona Septano and Mohammad Ahsan 21-11, 18-21, 24-22, on their second match point but it was not enough as the team lost 4-1 to go with their opening 5-0 defeat by China.

A call-up to take on the Japanese, again with doubles partner Clark ? who has now chalked up 90 caps ? earned him his 100th cap and cemented his name in history alongside some of the country's top sportsmen.

The pair beat Kenta Kazuno and Kenichi Hayakawa in another epic, 23-25, 21-19, 21-18 as England won 4-1 to avoid a relegation play-off.

"This was a really proud moment for me. It was one of my goals 13 years ago to play for England but I never thought I would get to 100 caps, so this is a really special milestone, especially as we don't actually play that many internationals," said Robertson.

"I have been extremely fortunate in my career. I am still only 31 and as long as I can stay injury-free and carry on playing at the top of my game, then I look forward to continuing to play for England and hopefully overtaking David Beckham!"

Robertson, who won the Olympic silver medal at the 2004 Athens Olympics with doubles partner Gail Emms, has played badminton since he was six-years-old.

He made his England debut aged 18 against China and has won a World Championship gold medal and six Commonwealth medals.
