Talent Identification Plan - BA of E

County: Nottinghamshire

Date: 28th June 2004

Competed by: Paul Adcock-Chairman NSBA

Synopsis

  • Following years of hard work/restructuring, we believe that we are able to bolt the new TID plan comfortably onto our existing structure.
  • We have a strong County Schools Association alongside a developing Junior Clubs Association.  We already have existing Junior Club Leagues and local tournaments.
  • We have established links with local Sports Colleges and enjoy strong support from our local County Council/District Councils.
  • We are also fortunate that we have sound financial resources as a School Association and a well-funded County Association supporting us.
  • In summary, we do not envisage any undue difficulty in working closely with the BA of E with its new talent identification plan.

1.Players (i.e. organised training)

Junior clubs, training groups, county training etc.

We will continue to receive referrals to our County Squads from the existing structure across Nottinghamshire: -

  • As Chairman of the Schools Association, I am also a member of the Junior Clubs Association, the Senior Association and the County Exec Committee.
  • Grade one and two players and County First Team players are not allowed to play in the Junior League.  The Clubs continue to refer to us their strongest players at various age groups for trials with the County Squad.
  • We have established squads at Under 13, 15 and 17 levels, but also have a junior development squad for children between the ages of 9 and 12.  We are therefore able to work with/develop players before entering the full Under 13 Squad.  Our Development Squad trains every Saturday at Ravenshead Leisure Centre between 12pm and 2.30pm.
  • Our links with the Manor Sports College gives us direct access to the eight primary schools linked to the College.  We are also developing strong links with the other emerging sports colleges across the County.
  • Every year we run a Junior Clubs Knockout Tournament, known as the Sunrise Tournament, which excludes all County players.  The County Coaches always attend this tournament and invite talented youngsters to join our development squad.
  • We will continue to offer taster event trials for non-County players.

As well as running County training sessions for all age groups on Saturday afternoons, we also have additional cells in the north of the County in Worksop, middle of the County in Mansfield and south of the County in Chilwell, one night per week during term time.  Once again, our Junior Clubs refer players to these cells as and when appropriate.

2. Network

Coaches, BDO, County Team Manager etc.

We have a strong and established network of contacts across the County: -

  • We have two Senior County Coaches-Dave Goodall, who takes overall responsibility for the Players up to age Under 13 and Peter Herrity, who looks after the players from ages Under 14 to Under 17.
  • Each County Coach is supported by several other qualified Coaches who work with them at the various cells each week.
  • We have age group administrators (usually one or two families) that support each County Coach at every age group level.
  • The time/efforts of our Badminton Development Officer are primarily focused on the Junior Clubs and local Schools.
  • For the first time in 2004 we will be taking part in the Nottinghamshire Youth games, which is already generating new players.  We intend to retain our position in the Youth games and we see this as the major vehicle for developing closer links with Schools/Districts around the County in the future.
  • Our relationship with County Hall and various District Councils is crucial to us.  We enjoy strong links with the District Sports Development Officers and the Sports Development Department at County Hall.  We continue to receive excellent support and financial backing from these local authorities.

3. Communication

How to inform relevant people in county (e.g. players, parents, coaches etc)?

  • Details of the new TID plan will be shared across the County through all of our Coaches, Parents and Players.  We have an effective email network across all age groups.
  • I will provide more detailed information to all of the County Coaches and three of our younger Coaches who will be attending one of the training days in Sheffield in July.  Effectively, we will create a panel of six key Coaches who will make referrals to the TID representative.
  • Details of the structure will be placed on the Nottinghamshire Badminton website and shared with the Junior Committees of both the schools and clubs associations.
  • Details will also be shared at parents’ briefings and other meetings that we have during the year.  Including the AGM.
  • Details will also be provided at the pre season briefings to all Parents and at our Annual Presentation Evening.
  • Details will also be shared with our contacts at County Hall and the Nottinghamshire Schools Council for Sport.  They have a regular publication called Sportslight, which we will provide, details to.

4. Finance

Costs (how to pay?)

  • As a School Association we have during recent years built up a strong cash reserve and we are well supported by Nottinghamshire BA which itself has a strong balance sheet.  Financial resources are not currently a problem for any of our Junior Associations.

5. TID process

Identification      Where?  How?  By whom?

Nomination        Who can nominate?

                           How decide final nominations?

  • We will continue to identify talent through our existing structure and network.  Referrals to be made by Junior Clubs/Schools with further talent to be spotted at our local tournaments and of course at the Youth Games.
  • A key panel of six coaches will be involved in this process-Peter Herrity and Dave Goodall, Glen Foye, Rachel Ellis, Dale Twigger and Dave Sanders.
  • Three of these will be attending the training days in July and I will share other details with the other three.
  • These individuals will make referrals to me providing the appropriate nomination forms.
  • I am fortunate as Chairman that my youngest son is now part of the County Development Network and I therefore anticipate being able to see personally all of the nominations put forward by the appropriate Coaches.
  • I will ensure that names are referred to my TCPO on a regular basis in rank order and I am confident that we already have at least half a dozen quality names to put forward.
  • We intend to review how the new TID process is working in December 2004 and again at the end of the season.
