Nottinghamshire County Veterans Report 2006/2007

All teams have played a full season of matches, with the exception of three cancelled matches against Norfolk which had no effect on the winning of the leagues.

30 ladies and 31 men represented the county in the ICC leagues. Many of them also playing in the newly constructed Yehlex Tournament. I would like to thank all who played, especially those who helped out at the last minute, or those who altered personal arrangements to support the teams.

Inter County Leagues

Teams were entered in all age groups except the Over 55’s due to the lack of men. The 40’s, 45’s, 50’s and 65’s played in the Midlands region and the Over 60’s in the North. The results were as follows

Congratulations to all teams for some fine performances, especially the over 45’s, 50’s and 65’s for winning their regions. The Over 45’s and 50’s had a Midlands play off at Cannock to determine who qualified for the finals. The Over 45’s lost a hard fought match against a strong Cheshire team but eventually lost 3 – 9. The Over 50’s were against a Derbyshire side who like us were not at their strongest, but in a very tight match we managed to win 7 – 5 with both the last two mixed being decided each by two points. The Over 50’s now join the Over 60’s in the finals at Stoke late in April. As Surrey could not raise a team, the Over 65’s won the event for the second time in three years by beating Dorset and Cumbria , the latter losing their number one man with an injury for the second day, as happened to ourselves the previous year.

The Over 50’s lost their semi final against Surrey who fielded four internationals, by 12-0, although the matches were hard fought. On the Sunday we played Devon for 3rd/4th place, and after the final doubles the match stood at 4 games each, but we went on to win all four mixed, thus attaining third place. A very creditable performance.

The Over 65’s were again successful winning all their matches, only dropping two rubbers in the process, and thus retaining the Kay Brindle Shield for the third time in succession.

The Over 50’s played extremely well having draws against Cheshire and South of Scotland, unfortunately the losing draw against South of Scotland meant that we lost 1st place in the count back.

The Over 40’s first team unfortunately lost Paul Simpson early in the tournament which cost us a higher place in the division, but a highlight of this team was a fantastic game of Mixed doubles seeing Chris Newton and Lorraine Buck beating Linda Sawyer and Tim Hudson Church an English international.

Special mention and congratulations to:-

Colin Abbott and Bill Houghton runner up of the English Nationals Over 65 Mens Doubles

Ken Tantum and Val Richmond winner of the Scottish International Over 60 Mixed Doubles, winner of the Northumberland Open Over 60 Mixed doubles, winner of the Cumbria Classic Over 60’s Mixed Doubles

Ken Tantum and Jim Morgan (Ireland) winner of the Scottish International Over 60 mens doubles

Robert Dumelow and Jenny Abbott winner of the Northumberland Open Over 55 Mixed doubles

Val Richmond and Beryl Goodall (Northants) Winner of the Cumbria Classic Over 60’s Ladies Doubles.

My thanks to all members of both the County Veterans and County Veterans Selection Committee as well as to all team captains for at times a difficult job well done. Also to Jenny Abbott who performs many other tasks alongside her match secretaries duties, and Colin Abbott who is also on hand at all home matches.
