Notts Players Up For The Challenge!

2010 Yelex Badminton Bonanza - Birmingham NIA 7/8th August 2010

This annual event attracts players of all abilities and ages. It is played on 28 courts in the huge National Indoor Arena, where the All England championships are also held. Over the two days, 1,200 games of badminton were played, all with feather shuttles and all with a friendly but fighting spirit. Honour and pride is always at stake and with plenty of games for everyone, sometimes it was the last players standing who won the rally!

Several pairs represented Notts. and all had an enjoyable and successful weekend. In the over 40's Mens doubles, two players returning after injury, Andy Morrell & Paul Abbey, performed outstandingly in their qualifying games and went on to win a tense and close final to be crowned Champions.

In the over 40's Ladies doubles, Notts. only representative Francis Fox, played with a lady she had never met before! After a tricky first game, the two players settled down to play extremely well and qualified for the final. Sadly, a more experience pair just beat them 21-19 but what a great effort!

The over 50's Mens doubles was won by a Notts./Derbys. brother pairing of Robert and Julian Dumelow. With a combined age of 112 years, Robert (the elder brother) rolled back the years and played like a teenager! They had a very successful day, winning all games including a close match against an experienced Cheshire pair.

Notts. were represented in the Mixed double by three pairs. Andy Morrell & Sally Moore reached the over 40's semi final but an experience pair and Andy's tired legs, resulted in a close game with a narrow defeat. Paul Abbey and Francis Fox lost just one game all day, to the eventual winners. A good performance from both pairs but the best Notts pair were Julie Peart & Julian Dumelow in the over 50's. Julie is just returning from a broken ankle and it was her first competitive games since January. A good, solid performance all day was rewarded with runners up position, having lost just one game narrowly to the eventual winners. 2nd place on the podium and a smart trophy was a nice reward, especially for Julie after her nasty injury and weeks on crutches!

The Yelex Badminton Bonanza is held in August every year and has categories for league, social & junior players and all disciplines including singles. It's a fun weekend with plenty of action and the chance to be coached by an England senior coach. Put it in your diary now - lets have even more Notts success next year!
