Three Notts Master’s teams, having won all their matches in their respective Midlands Leagues, qualified to play in the Masters County Championship Finals held at Birmingham University over the weekend of 26/27th April.
Prior to the Finals, Notts 50s team, winners of the Midlands East division had to play in a Play-off on neutral courts at Leicestershire against Worcestershire, winners of the Midlands West division. As reported previously, Notts 50s won the match 8-4.
Notts 50s team, having won the Championship Finals last season, were seeded 1st this year. Their first match, in the semi-final, was against old rivals West of Scotland. It was a tough match; however, the Notts team showed their dominance, winning all four Men’s, one ladies and two mixed rubbers, resulting in a 7-5 win to Notts.
The next day, the team played Hertfordshire in the Finals. Notts won all four Men’s, two Ladies and three Mixed rubbers, resulting in a comfortable 9-3 win.
Our 50s team have now won the County Championship Finals in two successive years.
Notts 55s team had a hard match against 2nd seeds Lancashire. Nott’s lost all four Men’s rubbers; however, our ladies won all their four rubbers. Each team then requiring three of the final four Mixed rubbers to win the match outright.
Although the Notts team battled hard, Lancashire won all four Mixed matches resulting in an 8-4 win to Lancashire.
On Sunday, the 55s were playing for third place against Wiltshire. Unfortunately, one of Wiltshire’s 1st ladies’ pair had to retire due to injury in the third end of her first Ladies match.
Notts won one Men’s, four Ladies and one Mixed rubber: resulting in a 6-6 draw.
On count back; games 14-14, points Nott’s 519 – Wiltshire 453. Resulting in a winning draw to Notts. Finishing in 3rd place overall.
Nott’s 65s team were up against a strong Surrey team and unfortunately lost all nine rubbers.
On the Sunday, the team played Devon. Notts were able to challenge their opposition in this match – four out of nine rubbers went to three ends. Devon won the match 6-3. Games 13-9. Points 418 – 402,
Notable performance from Jacqui Burton, who won all her three matches against Devon playing with partners Eileen Clarke, Gill Maloney and Jerry Deacon.
