Boom Time For Badminton

Members of Chilwell Olympians Junior Badminton ClubMembers of Chilwell Olympians Junior Badminton Club are celebrating gaining privileged status within the sport in this country.

Chilwell has been named and accredited as a Performance Centre by BADMINTON England, which means an investment of £10,000 per year until 2012 to help with talent identification and development of players, on and off court, ultimately aiming to produce players capable of medal success.

As part of the celebration, a 'Launch' event is taking place at Chilwell Olympia Sports Centre on 21st of November 2009 between 9am and 3 pm using all 10 courts. Club Players and players from local schools and other junior clubs are invited to take part in the event. Some of our current England stars will be there to support the event and pass on some of their skills and knowledge.

"This is brilliant news for badminton in both Chilwell and the county of Nottinghamshire," said Norman Jewitt, Chilwell Junior Badminton Club and PC Secretary. "The award of Performance Centre status is a tremendous boost to the club and we look forward to us developing stars of the future, (with the help of David Lindley England International and Head Coach of the Performance Centre) who can challenge for medals on the world stage."

Hazel Dickinson, Finance Director, of Djanogly City Academy Nottingham, said "We are delighted to collaborate on the Performance Centre for Nottinghamshire in order to make our extensive sports facilities available to the wider community, to support our work in encouraging healthy lifestyles amongst young people and to contribute to developing new talent and life-long experiences."

Sport England awarded BADMINTON England almost £2 million as part of a £3.5 million strategy to invest in clubs and coaches, via the Club Future programme. The funding will enable BADMINTON England to establish a network of 50 Performance Centres across the country.

The aim is to create a larger pool of talented players who can challenge for places on the World Class Start & Potential Programmes and, ultimately, win Olympic medals. The centre will also continue to develop existing coaches and find new ones.

BADMINTON England Chief Executive Adrian Christy said of Club Future: "For me the challenge of the culture of the clubs is one of the most exciting. It's where people start to play, where they continue a life-long experience, where they nurture talent, where coaches and volunteers are. And this is where we should be embedding our competition".

Performance Centre status means a close working relationship between the club and BADMINTON England, to introduce new players to the game and nurture potential champions of the future. It will play a major part in the National Governing Body's ambition to become the best Badminton nation in the World by 2016.
